How to be the better person in a difficult workplace

When you think about the makings of a good workplace, you will invariably think about the multitude of different people and personalities and how they all meld together to create a harmonious work environment – until they don’t!

Sadly, there are occasions when the mix of people doesn’t work, or an individual creates a negative environment that is hard to work in. It could also be that there are a group of people that enjoy gossiping when they should be working, avoiding doing their work when it is due, or delivering poor quality work that then needs to be amended by others before it can be used.

While all these situations are both frustrating and irritating, the best way to combat them is by dealing with them in a professional manner that shows the leaders of your company that your loyalty to them and your work is unwavering.

Tip 1 – be a strong communicator

One of the best ways to avoid negativity in the workplace is to be upfront and direct with colleagues. Doing this will stop any ambiguity and ensure that you do not become the source of any unpleasantness.

Many people worry about being too forthright and can end up using an apologetic attitude when talking to colleagues and seniors, but this will leave you open to being pulled and pushed in a number of different directions by those who want to spread negativity.

Instead, keep your communications focused on work, and do not be afraid to share your thoughts and ideas openly in the office environment or during meetings.

Tip 2 – be open to giving and receiving feedback

When it comes to giving and receiving feedback, many people are wary of saying the wrong thing or having to hear something that is difficult to accept.

Take the decision to accept all feedback positively and acknowledge that sometimes what you are told may tell you more about the person giving feedback than it does about you.

When you are asked for feedback, make sure you keep it honest and constructive – there is no point in telling someone that they are getting something wrong if you aren’t willing to help them rectify the issue.

Tip 3 – maintain a positive attitude

When you are having a bad day, it is easy to head into work feeling down and negative. However, it is at this time that you need to work harder than ever to maintain a positive outlook.

Many people are going through battles that you will be unaware of and by staying positive and confiding in the people that can help, you will be able to enjoy the work environment as a break away from the issues that are troubling you.

If things are too difficult to contend with, then reach out to your HR team to provide the support and guidance you need, as no one should ever have to face difficulties alone.

Tip 4 – model excellent teamwork

When it comes to being a positive influence in an office environment, one of the best ways to demonstrate your commitment is through modelling. This means doing your job the way you’d like others to do it and showing them the expectations you have for the people around you.

Modelling excellent teamwork is a great way to support your colleagues and promote an environment of success-makers who reach for the best outcomes.

Tip 5 – avoid office gossip

Our final tip that will help you to be a better person in a negative work environment is to fastidiously avoid office gossip at all costs.

Yes, it can be tempting to find out the hot topics of information but this will not only reduce your credibility as a positive influence, but it can also have a negative impact on the person or people you are gossiping about.

If you find yourself in a conversation that is being turned to gossip, politely decline to get involved and remove yourself.

Following these tips will not only help to keep your reputation as a force of positivity, but it will also ensure that you have the time and energy to do your work well, so that your company succeeds.
