The benefits of a positive mental attitude

On a daily basis, mental health is mentioned in the media in some way and rightly so. It is hugely important that we all recognise the importance of good mental health.

Each of us is unique and we all deal with things in different ways, which is why some people suffer from mental health problems. In the UK, it is believed that 1 in 6 adults suffer from depression and women are believed to suffer twice as much as men. However, the right mindset can have a huge impact on how we feel, and this is where a positive mental attitude can really make a difference.

What is a positive mental attitude?

The concept of having a positive mental attitude was first introduced in 1937 and developed from the book by Napoleon Hill – Think and Grow Rich. While the book doesn’t mention the term, it does highlight the importance of positive thinking as a way of life.

Therefore, if you are considered to have a positive mental attitude, then you are focused, flexible when faced with challenges and someone who surrounds themselves with other positive people.

The benefits of a positive mental attitude

Improved lifespan – people who have a negative attitude will find that they face challenges on a daily basis. As a result, they suffer from stress and anxiety, all of which can lead to health problems, such as blood pressure and heart issues. In the UK, around 180,000 people die from stress-related illnesses each year, which sadly demonstrates just how harmful it can be.

Lower rate of depression – those who suffer from depression will experience a range of negative emotions and low moods. However, a positive mindset can help us to feel better about ourselves, feel more positive when faced with certain situations and look at situations with a different perspective.

Simple home life – home life can prove a challenge, as there is always a lot to think about. From bills to relationship issues, as well as many other things in between, they can all become too much for us from time to time. Despite this, a positive outlook can help to ease many situations at home, helping us find the solutions that can ease our situation.

Career prospects – a positive mental attitude can help people to do more in the workplace. They will seek out new opportunities, overcome challenges and setbacks and become more productive at the same time.

Surround yourself with positive people – those who have a positive mindset will find that they surround themselves with other positive individuals. This is often seen in coworking spaces – positivity central! Pragmatic people share the same space and often, they come together to solve issues.

If you’ve been feeling the pressure this year; with some simple changes and a shift in focus, it is surprising how much your life can change when you think more positively. If you can change your mindset, you will really start to feel the benefits: positive thinking helps decision making, facilitates interaction, and it can also help to improve your resilience. All of these things will help you put any obstacles into perspective.

New year, new mindset? It’s worth giving it a go.
